FOIA – Stupid, Crap

This posting is named for the two “dirty words” with the highest “hit count”. Yes, the favorite word is “Crap”.

(of those I checked. After a while I ran out of imagination and, well, I’m not all that current on British curse words, so bullocks was about it… at any rate, of the list I thought of, “crap” was The Number One.)

Be Warned. They also toss around the “F-Bomb”. While most of the list below is in “population count” order, I’ve moved the F-word to the very end and put a WARNING in front of it. IF you get to the “crap”, be warned what is next…

As the total file count is well over 100, there is no way I can put them in a posting. Heck, it will take a fair amount of time just to dig through them (so if there is some particular word you are fond of, feel free to “dig here!” and post what you find ;-) Just put warning tags at the top of an F-bomb postings, OK?

What is posted here are the text lines (prefixed with the email name / number) in which the “special word” was found. I’ve removed any ‘false hits’ on attachments, but may have missed some ‘false hits’. (For example, I removed a Russian name that began with Shitxxxxx, but might well have missed some other variation). Some of the lines make it clear what the context is, and what the interest might be. Others are just vague. It will take a while to work through these.

I suspect that the items that caused The Team the most heartache and drove them most to cursing will likely be a fertile ground for finding “interesting topics”…

Each set begins with the command line I used to do the search. I have a command named “ff” (for “FOIA Find”) that does the actual work. It takes the argument of any search text of interest. IF in quotes, it is to eliminate compounds and look only for the word bounded by a blank space. Each set ends with a count of the lines found. For those where I removed “false hits” I adjusted the count (and hopefully kept it right ;-)

If there are any particular “keyword searches” anyone would like done, just let me know. It takes about 30 seconds to do one (and about an hour to get the posting up ;-) So for keywords with a low hit count, it’s about a minute to say “Found 10 for foo” and even for the ones with high hit counts, if all you want is the count and not the text, it’s quite fast…

I’ve done nothing to strip out the things that WordPress likes to consume, so lines with matched angle brackets may have simply turned to blanks. If one of those happens, I’ll try to past back in the original text. Email addresses are often that way.

Each of the articles on a F.O.I.A. topic will be assigned to the FOIA Category (at the right edge of the page). You can get directly to that list (which will be in reverse chronological order) here:

In Conclusion

Well, colorful fellows, these. At least, last time I looked, use of such language inside the workplace was to be discouraged (and in some cases subject to “sexual harassment” and “hostile workplace” laws / suits). I’ve not done a particular search for “sexual terms” or any of the other things that Managers And The Law class said were forbidden, but frankly this long list seemed like more than enough for one posting.

At the very least, this paints a picture of a group feeling under attack, and somewhat defensive / paranoid. Where a common reaction to ordinary things (like requests for the raw data to validate their findings) are met with hostility and anger. (Perhaps they need to attend an “anger management” class… HR? Anyone in HR want to council these folks?)

The number of folks they consider stupid or idiots is surprisingly large and wide ranging. Perhaps some day I’ll start making a list of “Phriends of Phil” and “Phil Calls Stupid”…

With that, “Happy Digging!”

  1. tckev says:

    From what I’ve seen from these self-appointed masters of ‘the climate’ they can not explain themselves very well – curses and cussing ensues because their methodology and results are questioned.
    Yet they are demanding that –
    1. We (all of us one way or another) pay for their dubious research without question.
    2. From their (faulty, inaccurate, misguided) results the world must change its basic methods of business and trade, at an incredible cost to us all.

    If they have good, reproducible SCIENCE then it MUST be able to stand public scrutiny – anything less is a very expensive con!

  2. John F. Hultquist says:

    I’ve noticed much crude language in e-mail messages but, as you say, these are workplace related and one might suspect they would be cleaner. Good luck with trying to analyze this aspect of CGII.

    Years ago (late 1950s) my father’s twin brother was coming some distance to spend a few hours at our house. My mother said he had a “potty mouth” or some such term. Dad put a tape recorder behind a curtain and turned it on when my uncle’s car came to a stop out front. About 30 minutes later we played the tape back for him. Such “colorful” language on tape seemed abrasive to everyone in the room. Those not knowing the recorder was on took no offense while the “nasty” words came from this, otherwise, very nice man. With the tape having been played, conversation was taken up as before. No change. However, he never used such language in letters or cards to us. All this was BC – Before Computers.

    The FOIA leaks seem to have great potential. These leaks suggest that some insiders believe that climate science should not be shrouded in secrecy. The CAGW Titanic may be soon be leaking all over the place given that the sacred deliberations of the IPCC’s AR5 working groups are now visible to the unwashed masses.

    I am trying to assemble a team to review the leaked AR5 documents and it occurred to me that Chiefio and some of the folks that hang out here might want to participate.

    Even though I serve Truth, Freedom and Prosperity the IPCC has taken a dim view of my activities. They sent me an email asking me to “Cease & Desist”:

    http://www.gallopingcamel.info/IPCC.htm

    If you are too busy to become an active participant in the review, please offer me some guidance as to how to respond to the IPCC.

    1. Grab my ankles and submit?
    2. Ignore their email?
    3. Nail my colours to the mast in defiance?

    If you recommend option #3 please note that my wife is worried that we will get sued and that is a serious concern given what happened to John O’Sullivan and Tim Ball:

  4. E.M.Smith says:

    @G.C.:

    You left off: Take the email to a lawyer and assess how likely you are to be at risk.

    IMHO, that is step one. It is also possible that forwarding a copy to the lawyer involved in O’Sullivan and sending a copy to Chris Horner (who is, I think, a lawyer) could also be productive. Finally, I think that there is some help possible from other groups (who’s name escapes me at the moment) who have been working with MacIntyre et. al.

    I would not “submit”, but I would “pause” until I had an assessment of actual risk.

    I would not ignore it (if not countered, it will not go away).

    I would not blindly go into defiance mode. (Only after you have legal advice and good odds would that be worth doing.)

  5. GregO says:

    Chiefio,

    I own a small technology company, as I have mentioned in previous posts.

    We have policies and procedures for company email.
    Here is a sampling:

    Rule 1. No profanity. Ever. It is grounds for immediate dismissal. Period.
    Rule 2. No chain emails. Break it after three and make a phone call, or better yet meet face-to-face.
    Rule 3. Never get personal. Ever. Grounds for dismissal. Period.

    My policy on email goes on – and I have never blogged on this topic, but as a manager/executive/owner of a company, I am just blown away by the careless, unprofessional, sloppy, personal, and frankly idiotic tone and content of Climategate 1 and 2 emails.

    I have been shocked and stunned by defenders – those who say boys will be boys – science is a blood sport etc. I know quite well what was going on by reading the emails. Intellectual, business, and academic communication; if it is conducted on a high professional level, must maintain a certain decorum that frankly masks the naked competition and passion native to the human heart. One must play the courtier. Failure to do so is simply evidence of a vulgar soul.

    The Climategate 1 and 2 emails reveal the vulgarity of spirit and soul of the authors. Their content speaks for itself as well. Lack of interest in the media and the general public? Speak volumes.

  6. E.M.Smith says:

    @GregO:

    Yes. I’ve had to council folks and have “discussions” with HR over lesser things than are in these emails. It’s hard to explain to someone who hasn’t “been there”, but once you have, it’s very clear. At some places where I have been employed, this content would get you walked out (as you noted).

    That large parts of the public endorse the behaviour mystifies me …

  7. gallopingcamel says:

    Chiefio,
    Good counsel! I had not thought of Horner although we have exchanged emails in the past; thus it will be easy to follow your suggestion.

    Your mention of Horner reminded me that Christopher Monckton also gave me his email address.

  8. David, UK says:

    Are Americans really that sensitive to the F-word? What’s going to happen when you see that little word beginning with F that rhymes with buck? Heart attack? Stroke? Sudden death? Jeez, quit with all the “warnings” please.

    OK, ranting aside, many thanks for posting this. It shows the clique clearly trying to convince themselves that they are right and that everyone who disagrees is full of crap. I honestly don’t think they even believe their own claims deep down. If they did they wouldn’t feel the need to be so damn defensive. There’s a definite pathology at work there.

    [Not all are, but some. I am comfortable with it, my spouse is not. So it is a common courtesy to WARN for those who are offended. I WILL NOT stop warning of such things. BTW, has nothing to do with being American or not. My Mum was British and very offended by even more minor curse words. I've known Chinese and Japanese who were put off by crude and vulgar speech as well. Oh, and a Canadian Aunt... Then there are my German / Amish relatives who, though technically American, have a culture rooted in old Germany... and... Well, I think you get the point. -E.M.Smith ]

  9. J Martin says:

    To Galloping Camel;

    I am not a lawyer, but I would agree you should talk to a lawyer in whatever country you are in.

    It begins to sound like the IPCC have something they would like to hide. This is the organisation which has now gone public saying that it should be above the law.

  10. J Martin says:

    Slightly off topic;

    Whilst driving, and with plenty of thinking time, it occurred to me that it was illogical for the police to raid Tallbloke Towers. I read on one of the blogs that the first lot of climategate emails were sent to the BBC and RealClimate.

    This would strongly suggest that whoever FOIA.org is or are, that they were most certainly not from the sceptic community and either Googled climate change and got RealClimate or asked around. In the message provided by FOIA in the second lot of emails it’s clear that they are from, if not the tree hugger commmunity, then the people hugger community. Did the police get a Psychologist to do a profile of FOIA ?

    The concern about lots of people living on less than a dollar a day is not primary to the climate sceptic community. To digress slightly, poverty is a function of several things, a good and functioning Justice system, a stable society, an extensive education system and perhaps above all else a stable and sustainable population. Too many societies accept food handouts but then their populations explode but nothing else changes, with the result that poverty remains, only this time for an even larger number of people. You cannot cure poverty by giving everyone an extra dollar. Too often, handouts end up going into military hardware and Swiss bank accounts. I find it difficult to empathise with mass poverty for the above reasons.

    To return to the subject at hand, after waiting 5 weeks for the BBC or RealClimate to publish the information, whoever released the emails must have been surprised at the lack of action and then had to do some research in order to get the emails out there.

    So have the police missed this contradiction ? Perhaps not. The police have no doubt been jerked around by both the UEA and various politicians over something they no doubt view as an insignificant and meaningless soap. So in order to make it look as if they were doing something and not ignoring it they raided Tallbloke towers in a suitably impressive (for the politicians and UEA) manner where it was certain they would find nothing, knowing they would find nothing.

    My guess is that FOIA is one of the people in the emails. Also I think that UEA also think that it’s one of their own people and got Sir somebody in to produce an internal report so as to help dissuade the police from carrying out effective investigations within UEA. Paying £10,000 to get a copy of their emails from the server held by the police would also seem to me to be a clever way of adding to the suggestion that it was an external hack. For the UEA it’s all about image, much better to be seen as the victims of an extremist organisation than an internal whistle-blower.

    At the end of the day the UEA has no choice, Jones et al probably have tenure, they didn’t get caught within the 6 months, the police didn’t try a sting operation to see if Jones carried on breaking the law. So in some ways the saga is over and the World moves on (for the most part unaware) to the deepening of the solar minimum currently in train. The UK imports nearly half it’s food, we might face worse consequences than were seen in the 1600s.

    Who dunnit remains an annoying mystery, but not of great importance. Another mystery is why FOIA didn’t release everything in one go, surely it would have had much greater impact. The second lot of emails have been effectively ignored by the press in the UK.

    In raiding Tallbloke Towers the police are either demonstrating a poor level of professionalism or are being surprisingly clever at dealing with political pressure. I err toward the latter view.

    They drink too.

  13. Tim Clark says:

    I wonder, considering the predicament taxpayers face, how many counts the word “screwed” would hit.

  14. E.M.Smith says:

    @Tim Clark:

    I do a count on it (probably tomorrow as it’s bedtime now…)

    @Jeff Alberts:

    Both are valid English words, but a web search shows bollocks more likely the slang one. I’ll check for both….

    @J Martin:

    I think it is an easier answer than that. ( I posted this somewhere before, but I’ve lost track of where…) The short form:

    They took the router. Only things of interest in it are the MAC (hardware) address and the config files (check for multiple personalities).

    They took only the recent laptops, not the gaggle of older computers: So, not looking for data on old boxes. Not looking for MAC address of old boxes.

    They asked for data lockdown from WordPress. Only data there are contact trace info. IP number MAC address login/posting time. From IP number you can get a general location.

    Odds are that Foia is ‘near’ UEA, in England. That is “near” Tallbloke as he is also in that part of England ( I think..).

    Police wanted to ‘match MAC addresses’. They had a MAC address in hand (and these are issued to hardware makers in blocks, so would know approximate age of hardware. They knew it was a relatively new box, thus no need to take old ones).

    Raid on Tallbloke was to try to match MAC addresses, and / or since Talbloke was on the site where the release notice was made, when it was made, to see if “they talked” and had any email trail to follow.

    It’s a reasonable scenario. It is what I would be trying to do (given what we know of where they had looked).

    That they returned the laptops and did nothing says to me they got skunked. No MAC match. No email exchanged.

    Not surprising really, Foia is a smart cookie. Heck, I know ABOUT Russian servers but I’ve never used one. It would likely take me a week just to figure out how to find a reliable one and use it. So they are ‘better than me’. That makes them pretty good. Now since I know to never use my own main laptop and MAC, I’m sure they do to. Since I know to use a disposable network card (flushing it, and it’s MAC address, when done) I’m sure Foia does too.

    My suspicion, btw, is that on ’round two’ Foia bounced off a router near Tallbloke to look over his place before contact. He’d want to ‘wash’ his location via multihopping anyway, so might as well end up near Tallbloke (and was perhaps even monitoring his traffic to know WHEN to release the goods… Given the ‘non-takers’ in the first release, he’d want to avoid that in round 2. So minimum risk and fasted time to dump wold be to watch a desired ‘target’, like Tallbloke, until he was logged on to somewhere interesting, THEN make the posting there saying “goodies are here:”.)

    That would leave IP addresses in records pointing to near Tallbloke, and the Police, being bound to investigate anything suspicious would try to get the MACs and logs and cut to fit… That nothing happened says it was a flop. So we’re back at “not Tallbloke, now what?” in their department….

    FWIW, I’m not going to speculate any more on who Foia is. I have some pretty well founded ideas, and don’t want to be the one to accidentally ‘out’ them…

  15. J Martin says:

    In UK English, one of the most widely used slang words used as an alternative for rubbish, is, ” bollocks “.

    A search on that would surely produce some results.

    How rude and offensive it is seen as varies somewhat.

  16. Pascvaks says:

    Thoughts-

    Dad told me many years ago that profanity was the attempt of an ignorant mind to express itself. He said it was ok to appear and sound ignorant sometimes, everybody needs to let off steam, but not to let it become a habit. Don’t know why it happened, or what was different at that moment from so many others, but for some reason I remembered that little teaching point and missed so many others. I’ve tried the same on my two, nothing seems to stick. Kids these days are so ignorant. But one thing I have to give them, they do invent non-dirty dirty words at an astounding rate and slip them in at lightning speed. I can only understand half of what they say. Maybe –I’m willing to admit I may be wrong– they’re not as stupid and ignorant as they so often sound.

    Wouldn’t it be grand if some Psychology-types would analize these emails (and the first batch too) and do one of those famous psychoanalysis things on these guys. Bet half the shrinks would find these folks are psycho with grand dillusions of immortality, half would find them normal with no faults, and half would think that they are an advanced party of aliens from another planet bent on taking over the world and enslaving humans to mine for rare earth minerals. (always liked SciFi;-) Oh, yes… it a publish or perish world, I’m sure half of them will write more than one fantastic scientific report on their findings.

    No offense EM, but I imagine the most profane ‘stupid-crap’ these folks came out with would need a CIA Super Computer to assess. And… as profanity is in the ear of the beholder, I’m positive that generations henseforth will call them by many names of illrepute (sp?).

    PS: Genius requires stupidity to stand out in any significant way. I hope the brighter boys and girls show up soon.

    @E.M.: The climate scam and in special “Climate Gate” I & II are not known in spanish speaking countries, where, consequently, climate lie is in well health and alive. A key issue is that there were many emails sent to their “peers” in those countries, as it was a “business” of a global reach.

  18. Pascvaks says:

    @Adolfo

    When you have the time, would you elaborate on the way AGW is currently perceived among academics, media, politicians, business, working class, college students, youth? I’m in the dark and curious. Trust you far more than a google on it and someone else’s opinion. Thanks!

  20. J Martin says:

    adolfogiurfa (15:48:17) :

    @J Martin (11:10:55)Does that word relates to “Balls”?

    YES. But is mostly used to mean “rubbish” or “nonsense”,

    So you would hear; “that’s a load of bollocks” or “that’s bollocks” both meaning “that’s complete rubbish or nonsense”

    I would say it’s used as often as “bullshit”.

    Used in order to be slightly offensive and provide extra emphasis. It’s more often found in speech, and would be less likely to occur in writing and emails. But judging by some of the other words CRU have used I wouldn’t be surprised if they had also used that particular colloquialism.

  21. Jeff Alberts says:

    I’ll bet most of the F-bombs were from Ed Cook. He likes the F.

  22. E.M.Smith says:

    @Jeff Alberts:

    I haven’t checked (a bit too busy…). Of course someone could hit the link in the article and check the particular emails and report back on who was saying what to whom… hint hint

  23. tckev says:

    You will probably like to note this ruling that I found lurking behind lot of other news items…

    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/01/30/cru_foia_landmark/

    Basically if the CRU are given a FOIA they MUST look at all back-ups too. So all that ‘I just deleted the data’ may well come back to haunt them…
