An 8.0 in the Solomon Islands. Who knows how much damage or how far away. No Tsunami data yet.
So first off, h/t to Crosspatch for spotting this one. ( I was face planted in dinner ;-)
Looks like they have a mess of little after shocks going off. Several 6.x and many 5.x or smaller.

Thanks, E.M., for keeping us updated on this old ball of dirt.
That sort of information that would be available worldwide on TV screens if governments worked for the public.
ABC (Australian Broadcasting) is running a live blog here: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-02-06/solomons-quake-triggers-tsunami/4504034
@Crosspatch:
That ABC link says there is a tsunami (but that it isn’t likely to be much in Australia).
So most tsunami damage likely already done and close to the source. IIRC there isn’t a lot of antipodal focusing to “my” side of the Pacific… So South America ought to be OK too. With the Indonesian Arc in front of it (and Australia) ought not to do much in the Indian Ocean either.
Still, looks like some small villages are gone.

Is it there an update of these?:

If THEY don´t publish it, the alternative, following Chiefio´s regular M.Vukcevic ideas, is to watch this:

The public IS in charge. If there is demand, supply will present itself.
[Reply:George, mutating your name and IP number does not bypass moderation. It does flag the account as "suspect"... Now I may not service the moderation queue as fast as you like, but every new handle you hide behind just slows that down and does not speed it up. By default all new ip addresses and new names go to moderation hold and a longer, slower, evaluation. -E.M. Smith]
Whoa, that was scary. He should have headed further inland. IMHO.
Fake. That’s footage of the Japan tsunami from 2011.
As predicted by Piers Corbyn
Unusuallly, I saw a cluster of precursor quakes there when I fired up ‘xearth’ on Monday morning. (If you don’t know xearth, it replaces your desktop wallpaper with a world map, on which you can optionally plot downloaded quake information. It also *really* encourages you to clear out most of that shortcut overload, so you can see the map.) There was a whole bunch of 5 – 6 magnitude hits there which drew the eye straight to them, and I wondered then whether ‘this was it’ or just a precursor. Right now, there are so many overlapping circles you can’t see Santa Cruz at all. They’re really getting hammered, and I wish them an early end to it.
@fortuneteller: Nope!: As predicted by Michele Casati:

@SteveC:
That is why I do an “alert status” on 5.x to 6.x quakes in my area. If a ‘swarm’ starts and ramps, even a little bit, it’s best to do the ‘prep, duck, and cover’ drill. One of those times it will advance to The Big One. A “lone 7.x” causes the same thing (at least until some aftershocks show it not to be a foreshock).
One hopes the folks on the islands are doing well. It will be ‘rock and roll’ for a while…
@Adam Gallon:
Single story wood structures have the best quake performance. Islands have a lot of those.
Just sitting down gets you through 7.x as long as the place isn’t masonry or other stiff materials.
Then leave anywhere near shore for a while…
It is the “advanced” western urban high rise buildings that are the problem… Especially those with lots of masonry or glass.
