Ah, I think I Like Argentina!

The thermometer don’t move much and the temperature record looks pretty darned flat too (with a normal cyclical ripple).

Argentina just might make a nice “test case” for the GIStemp claim that “Boxes, Grids, and Anomalies” will save us from The March Of The Thermometers. If GIStemp shows not much change for Argentina, but lots of change for Brazil, well… One would expect the tropical rain forest to be more steady and the poleward peninsula to be more variable. Dang it, it’s been less than an hour and I have another project 8-}

With that said, here are the charts for Argentina. Thermometer migration first (not much, mostly a bit of middle aged spread near the center) then temperature history. Come to think of it, if the GIStemp temperature cycles followed the “middle aged spread” bulge, that too, would be an interesting invalidation of the merits of Grid, Box and Anomaly as “perfect cure all”. If they show 1900-19teens as very cold, and then rapid warming into 1940, you can basically stick a fork in ’em. We do have a gradual drop off in thermometers from 1997 or so to present (losing in the middle south, gaining a bit just shy of the furthest north), so it isn’t completely pristine… But the temperatures just look near dead flat to me.

  1. A statistic for a whole country as long as Argentina (from near the Polar Circle to the Tropic of Capricorn) is not very revealing. The north part is quite tropical, dominated by a very dry climate, while Patagonia is too dominated by the nearness of Antarctica and the winds blowing from the Pacifica from the southwest. Cyclical rain patterns affect a lot those regions.

    The central part (the Pampas) are more stable, not subject to extreme variations as the northern and southern parts, so it can be a better place to see what’s the trend. In this website (in Spanish) you have tables and temperature graphs with trends showing clearly it has been cooling since 1987, and the trend keeps going:

    Cordoba is at about 64ºW 32ºS right in the country’s geographic center.

    you’ll find an analysis of 1583 temp records in US Historical Climatology Network database, with graphs with trends for every station in the USA from 1900 to 2000 (except those stations that have shorter records). Warwick Hughes called this a “Titanic job”.
