GHCN - Asia
Orginal image and larger size image.
UPDATE 11/3/2009:[ In playing with my new ‘by altitude’ program doing the QA testing; I’ve found that in 2009, no part of Japan is higher than 300 meters; at least as far as GHCN is concerned. Japan has been having some serious erosion in the mountains, it would seem… See the bottom chart. -E.M.Smith ]
In two earlier postings we looked at Russian Siberia and China in isolation. In both cases we found that thermometer changes dominated the pattern of temperature change.
But what does Asia look like if we set aside these two (admittedly large) areas? Is there more evidence for stability when thermometers don’t move around so much? Or is there more digging to do here?
The short form is: With SIberian and Chinese changes taken out, the rest of Asia is remarkably stable and shows no evidence for “Global Warming”.
I’ll be doing a bit more pondering of this data in the next day or two. For now, here is the “early edition”.
.
The Asia (minus Siberian Russia and China) Temperature Series
Here we look at asia minus the Siberian Issue and the Chinese thermometer count crash. So this is a set that tends to be focused more into the “Middle East”, India with south asia, southeast asia, Mongolia, and the Japan, Korea set. It is worth noting that while traditionally the South East Asian area includes Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines, GHCN places those island areas into the Pacific Region; so they are not in this set.
We see the usual slow start to thermometer counts, with a very high average of about 20 C, yet by 1890 we have 100+ thermometers and the average is stabilizing in the teens ( 17.3 C in 1890, drifting down to 16 C by 1891). Temperatures then roll between about 15 C and 17 C until 1994. At that time, there is a small spike in 1995 to 19 C in temperatures with very unusual December temperatures (some dropouts?) and then continues on to end 2008 at 16.6 C; within 0.4 C of the 16.2 C overall average of all years.
Just mighty darned flat.
There is NO “Global Warming” in Asia.
There are some artifacts of thermometer deletions in China, and similar instrument changes in Siberia. But you can not have global warming in Asia if half of it is not participating and the other half has a broken thermometer record.
It just is not in the data. And if it is not in the data, it can not be in any product made from the data unless that product creates it from whole cloth (i.e. GIStemp and probably Hadley – though Hadley lost their raw data so what they have is now worth nothing being completely without foundation…)

We have some “ripple” in some of the latitude bands, but nothing persistent. The 50 N gains s, but so does the 25 N gain and we mostly just have ‘spreading out’. All in all, not too bad.

This chart is the same as the others. Year, 12 monthly averages of the daily MIN-MAX average, the average of those daily values over the whole year, and the number of thermometer locations (ignoring modification flag) in use in that year.

Asia in total, the Temperature History in GHCN
So what does the “by Latitude” profile look like for ALL of asia? China and Siberia included?
The one thermometer starts in the far south in the “less than 20 N” band. We then have the typical diffusion of the thermometer fad and by about 1900, things are pretty stable. There is a little shuffle back and forth between these 5 degree bands, but not too much from that point on. We can have pretty good faith that the flat temperature history above is not an artifact of latitude shifts of thermometers. We do see some general erosion of the upper latitudes in favor the the lower after about 1950 and you will see that in the “whole asia” temperature series just below.
This is the usual South Pole on the left, North Pole on the right.

For your amusement, I’ll include two more charts. One with Russian Siberia excluded, the other with China excluded. First, without China:

Next is without Russian Siberia. In this case we can see that ALL the jitter in the 60 N and to the pole are in Siberia. We can also see the 1990 bump to the lower latitude bands as thermometers are removed from the records, especially in China.

Asia, the whole thing, temperature series
There is a fascinating cyclical ripple from 9 C to 10 C to 9 C to 10 C with some jitter each side. Then in 1990 the “Step Function Hotter” we’ve come to expect with the thermometer deletions in those years (as reflected in the China and Canada/Comrade links).

In Conclusion
There is a fascinating hint that Asia might be a critical part of the cyclical oscillations we see elsewhere in the climate system, particularly the oceans, or it just might be ‘bleed through’ of that Siberian thermometer ripple. There is clear evidence that thermometer change dominates the rest of the signal.
There is nothing that even comes close to being a “CO2 AGW Warming Signal”.
