Someone Left The Cake Out In The Rain

I finally had a few minutes to run the “by altitude” variation of my reporting program and see what was happening in the major continent groupings. While most of them are a bit complex and will need more detail (i.e. a look at individual countries to see what is happening), the “Pacific Basin” of Country Codes starting with a 5 is pretty clear.

The Pacific Islands are sinking all right, but from the top down… All the thermometers are running for sea level.

Notice that this chart has asymmetrical altitude bands. The gradations are smaller at the low altitudes than they are at the top. In the middle, I go by 100 m, then a 500 m jump, then 1000 m, then everything above 2000 m. We have the usual start with one thermometer in one place (in this case somewhere near sea level), but by 1880 when GIStemp begins time, we are well into the mountains.

Then lately, during The Great Dying of Thermometers, we have the evisceration of mountain coverage. Since GIStemp anomaly maps are sensitive to thermometer count and location changes (as shown in the early benchmark of STEP3) this will bias the Pacific Basin anomaly maps. The only question is “How Much?”

Not that you folks down under had much altitude to spare to begin with, but now more than 1/3 of the readings are “on the beach” in altitude… Everything over 100 m is just melting in the rain and headed for the beach… And the old reports from elevation are kept in for the “GIStemp baseline” period, so GIStemp will be comparing mountain baseline records to beaches today.)

I think we all knew about the observatory on top of The Big Island being left out of the record; but I did not realize that other places were being systematically taken out and shot too.

So as of now, no place in any of the Hawaiian Islands is above 50 m.

And this is a valid comparison to a “GIStemp Baseline” period with about 10% – 15% “up slope” how again?

Now this is an interesting case. In the ’60s ’70s and ’80s during the “GIStemp baseline” interval, we have a bit of thermometers at altitude (above 1000m). But not after.

    I have a rural yard in Hawaii, elevation 1450 feet. I’ll put a thermometer out and read it, if anybody wants.

    I’d be interesting in having an A/B of your yard vs the reference station (undoubtedly at the airport… )

    It would give a direct “selection bias” measurement for he “at elevation non-airport” vs the official station of record.

    REPLY: [ It harkens back to an old Celtic tradition. There is a “Celtic Thread” that runs through the heartland of America, but begins as a tap root in Europe. From the Scots, Irish, British, even the Iberians… Spanish and the somewhat Romanized French, there is a Celtic Thread… And one of those traditions was that any person could call for a common battle against a transgressor or against a wrong. If the cause was just, an army would form behind them. Britain is named for a woman who did just that against the Roman Army…

    So I’ve picked up my computerized ‘sword’ and started in to hacking at the opposing line. That others join with me, or that I see another in need and join their part of the line; well: That is just a bit of evidence that the cause is just… Time will tell who is to be the victor and to whom belongs “The Hero’s Portion”… -ems ]

    Hi,

    Have just found that it is possible to get free access to the NIWA (National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, New Zealand) temperature records for almost all NZ climate stations. Go to the NIWA website and hook into the Cliflo database. You need a username and password and you have to apply for it. Takes about 10 min and you have to be bound by some terms and conditions for use of the data.

    The interesting part is that there are quite a few current (up to date) climate stations with records of 40 plus years that have either been dropped by GHCN or were never in it in the first place.

    It looks like it might be possible to significantly repair the NZ portion of the GHCN “march of the thermometers”.

    Great! I’ve got my “A/B” benchmark of with / without v2.USHCN working now all the way through anomalies; so I need to get that “write up” done before I pile on another location. But N.Z. will be one of the first in the queue for the update / repair of missing thermometers. Now I just need to find a similar source for Australia, China, Canada, Russia, Japan, Bolivia,…

    Sidebar: I also have ‘in queue’ an interesting write up on altitude in South America… Bolivia ‘is interesting’ ;-)

    Oh, and for the terminally impatient: The v2 benchmark does in fact show 2 things: Anomaly processing does reduce the impact of thermometer change AND thermometer change does ‘leak through the anomaly filter’ to a significant degree ( like 2/10 C range from 6/10 C delta input. The exact number varies by month so I’m working on how to best characterize the figure).

    The bottom line is that all these postings about thermometer change by latitude and by altitude are about things of “material impact” on the anomaly maps created by GIStemp as that (as yet unpublished) benchmark confirmed.

    So “put the thermometers back in” for the SmithTemp variation of the product just got a big boost…

    Many of the NZ climate stations that dropped out of GHCH have had a change of “agent number” which is one of the codes for the station. This commonly corresponds to the creation of a new record for the site. The new record is either a location change (in some cases) or it is an equipment change at what amounts to the same site. Equipment changes are typically tagged with an extra acronym (either Aws or Ews). I think Aws stands for “automated weather station”.

    It looks like the South Island, which is all I have looked at so far, could have as many as 30 temp records that are more-or-less continuous over at-least the last 25 years, ie from the mid 1980’s onward. There are also a few more that are “bitsy” i.e. either short or with missing sections.

    Many of these stations and station-combos have continuous data going back more than 50 years.

    One question that could be asked is why there were so few NZ records in GHCN? How was the choice of contributing stations made. Who maintains the station coverage in GHCN? Why has such a poor job been done?

    On further examination of the NIWA database I have found for the South Island of NZ:

    52 climate stations with reasonably good monthly records over 20+ consecutive years all of which are continuous through to 2009. Some have had station moves or changes of measuring equipment. In that case they have multiple station codes and might need to be spliced together.

    a further 27 stations with reasonably good monthly records over 20+ consecutive years that closed down before 2009 (or have not been compiled by NIWA).

    many more stations with monthly records that are either less than 20 consecutive years or that have somewhat patchy records and many of these continue to 2009.

    So there has been no great dying of temperature measurement stations in the South Island of NZ. It is a failure of communication between NIWA and GHCN.

    Most of the station files are up-to-date as of Sept 2009.

    Although I have not looked yet I am sure a similar pattern will hold for the North Island (which is a similar size to the South Island, but is more heavily populated).

    REPLY: [ What I expect to find, world wide, is that the individual governments and BOM still run a full set of thermometers and still record the data in fine fashion. (It will be used for local needs, like agriculture and weather reports). But that the GHCN data set is corrupted by a decision to drop new temperature data from colder locations (by latitude or by altitude) while keeping in the past of those places (an act of terrible bias, IMHO) so that the GHCN data series is, on the face of it, a biased and broken data series. I’ve demonstrated that with the USHCN.v2 re-integration. I’ve also identified the “data manager” of the GHCN product in a prior posting. That he works for NASA and is organizationally ‘near’ Hansen is, er, um, ah, “probably just a coincidence”.. ;-) and I’m sure it’s just a misunderstanding… -ems ]

    Whilst there are more stations and more complete records in NIWA’s Cliflo, there are still very little above 200m altitude. This is simply as most people live on the coast, the mountains are sparsely populated with most areas above 800m difficult to access. However, I do know that some of the regional councils in more recent years have installed weather stations on some mountain sites inland (such as ECan). Also, there are some enthusiast weather stations, there is one at Castlehill for example who makes his data available via his website. Also, some of the ski fields are likely to have weather stations. It’s a shame that there is extra data out there and that NIWA do not take ownership of it, and organisations like GISS don’t want more stations in rural / colder or cooling areas to dent there nice upwards curves! Great work that you are doing and interesting to see the decline in higher weather stations in NZ and the apparent absence of high altitude stations.

    I thought you guys might like to know that NSW (state of Australia) farmers and station owners maintained climate records since colonisation; and they recorded the warmest year as 1934.

    It has been increasingly popular amongst scientists and academics to dismiss all non-science-sourced data to a bin labelled ‘Anecdotal’; a posture that exposes a very unscientific breed of elitism.

    Worse, the evidence I have access to shows a significant percentage of scientists are open to grant and career favouring bias.

    Farmers, on the other hand, have nothing to gain from distorting records, and everything to gain from preserving accuracy.

    If a rumour I heard a couple of years ago is true, NASA reviewed its data and discovered that 1934, not 1998, was the warmest year, but this embarassing statistic was quashed. If this rumour is true, that is a curious correlation.

    Regardless of the above, I believe the real issue is the anti-democracy denial of national electorates, in deciding for themselves their future and that of their children. We need an end to government by expert and megalomaniac.

    Perhaps then, we will see a return to objectivity and sanity.

    The original US model was based on the ultimate authority being at the lowest level, and delegated upward. We’ve gotten away from that. Your description of the result “government by expert and megalomaniac” is quite apt.
