Quakes – 7.4 off Japan / Iwo Jima

Quake Cluster 7.4 off Japan / Iwo Jima December 2010

Quake Cluster 7.4 off Japan / Iwo Jima December 2010

Well, I’m a bit “slow” on this one. Yeah, distracted by Christmas and not watching. Lucky for us, Tim Clark was. So a h/t to Tim in https://chiefio.wordpress.com/2010/12/23/precipitation/#comment-10321. I figure since it’s kind of in the middle of the water the impact will have been pretty low. I hope.

OK, here are the “particulars”:

Here is a “live view” of the same place so you can watch anything “new” that develops (though most of it is behind us now… I hope… “Hope is not a strategy. -E.M.Smith”…)

We first saw the action on that plate boundary back in this posting:

https://chiefio.wordpress.com/2010/12/15/quakes-string-of-pearls-5s-asia-6-2-new-guinea/

Now we’ve got all sorts of rocking and rolling going on in one spot on that same plate boundary. Maybe I’m just being a bit silly, but when it’s consistent building activity on a particular plate I get worried. Maybe it’s just that I’m on the other edge of that particular plate…

We’ve got “action” in Indonesia / New Zealand as well:

The Rest of the World Earthquakes

Here is a Pacific centric view:

With quite a bit of action North of New Zealand and Australia. There is also that significant, and newer, 6.2 in Alaska. I don’t like the way that the “wave” is going around the plate toward ME… So, what, about 2 weeks to California? Oh Boy, I might get a “great quake” on my Birthday….

Looks like in / near Chile there is another set of two 5.x quakes, though a bit further apart than a ‘pair’.

Something is Very Wrong when a 6.5 doesn’t get more than “honorable mention”…

North America

A bit of interesting action continuing on the mid-Atlantic spreading zone and some mild stuff down in Mexico. So we’ve got three 5.x quakes on that Mid Atlantic ridge.

Humph… 3 in the 5.x range down in Central America and off the coast and I’m not even thinking it’s worth putting the details in? A 5.6, 5.0 and 5.8 off the coast? Somethings up, I fear…

There is an odd string of “Dinky” quakes near Memphis… Hope that fault doesn’t decide to wake up… And what’s the deal with Oklahoma City, did they build it on top of the only fault line they could find? ;-)

We’re getting a bit of a “3 Cluster” while So.Cal. is racking up the 4.x action. The whole ring of fire is creaking…

There was also a 5.4 in Puerto Rico on Christmas Eve. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Quakes/pr10358004.html

I heard from one person who is in PR that communications were out for about 30 minutes afterward.

Merry Christmas to you and your family. Musings From the Chiefio make my days more interesting. Its the fine mind, and the investigative spirit that follows all leads and explains them to us that I admire.

My renewed interest in geology is suggesting that “catastrophism” as a change factor for human living conditions might be much more potent than “gradualism”. (Geotripper had a fascinating post on mass wasting in SoCal, just one of the smaller “disaster” processes.) The erosion and movement of plates continues day by day, but certain “rifts” or “smashes” seem to be significantly more potent than others. Something like: one more foot of extension and the asthenosphere poors or explodes out.

I certainly hope that all the earthquakes lighting up the map do not portend some kind of disaster for a number of Earthly places. Thanks for your link to volcanism and solar minima. In any event, emergency supplies and a plan for circulating them into everyday living seems wise advice.

  3. Baa Humbug says:

    Breaking

Tsunami alert for Vanuatu Fiji and New Caledonia after a 7.6 quake at shallow depth near Vanuatu.

    http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5jf58vFcZ-zbTkdJR9TH6DK2Ugw9A?docId=CNG.81282d483c9208446f7bbcd961623561.de1

The quake struck at 12:16am on Sunday local time (1316 GMT Saturday). There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

According to the PTWC, if a tsunami happened it could be expected to reach Vanuatu around 1338 GMT Saturday, New Caldeonia at about 1359 GMT, and Fiji 1512 GMT.

Vanuatu, which lies between Fiji and Australia and north of New Zealand, is in the “Pacific Ring of Fire” known for its seismic and volcanic activity caused by moving plates in the Earth’s crust.

  4. P.G. Sharrow says:

The number of small quakes in the U.S. and specially in California has really dropped off. I am expecting large event in south state around the Tehachapis, San Andreas fault area very soon. Look for “lights in the sky” the night before. pg
