Reminder
After some bouncing up and down as they screwed around with the graphs, the Grimsvoten graph is back to normal. But now it’s showing the total energy line almost matching the 2004 point of eruption. It’s time to start watching closely to see if this seismic metric has any predictive power. IMHO, it could be off by up to 50% as a guess, so I’m not holding my breath. Then again, I’d not plan a camping trip to the volcano right now either…
The line of total seismic energy at Grimsvoten in Iceland is continuing it’s very vertical climb… I think Iceland will be “sooner rather than later”… IMHO, we hit “equal to last time” in about a month. The question of what happens then is still an open one, but it is a ‘watch here’ flag…
Take a look again at the Iceland Volcano Watch Metric posting. The total seismic energy line continues to go ever more vertical.

Spots holding high at over 300 on this one chart. Size per spot looking a bit larger to me, too. More “bigger than ones” out toward the rifting zone. I’m just not liking this… By the color, though, you see a lot of yellow, so some of it is just ‘left overs’ from the surge at the approach to the supermoon.

Looks like Alaska just picked up a 4.4 and Arkansas a 2.5 near the New Madrid area. Not big enough to be an issue, but the Alaska one is a mild “maybe watch a bit”.

Right after the quakes, USGS reported TWO eartquakes of 7.4 Richter, one at aproximate 20 km depth and the other at about 60 km depth. After proper massaging it now appears as only one of a not so scaring magnitude.
And Mexico picks up another one…

Do you know of any non-US quake reporting agencies? It’s all well and good to have a ‘conspriracy theory’ about the USGS, but as seismographs are spread all over the planet it seems like an easy way to get ‘caught’…
Basically, until some other agency shows things too, I’d be more inclined to think the individual traces were just an error of some sort. (blasting for a new mine, freeway, whatever).
As we ARE seeing quakes reporated on / near the New Madrid area from USGS, I’m having trouble buying the whole thesis that the place is having quakes and the locals just don’t notice things moving… And if we’re talking 1’s and 2’s, those can easily show up from a dump truck in the parking lot dumping a load, so need some QA to remove them…
Basically, until it is more than just some guy being puzzled over traces he may not even understand, I’m not buying into the “USGS hiding New Madrid” activity idea.

It is not a conspiracy at all, but the good intention of preventing hysteria and over reaction as possible. Anyway, as you say, the scientific community and interested amateurs will find the data; that´s OK as WE are a few, most of the people won´t care and that it is not a conspiracy but a self-defense mecanism to keep on living as if nothing is happening.

I didn’t post the video’s because of the (in build) conspiracy theory, to be really honest with you, I don’t care.

As for the quakes, I am especially interested in the Panama region (border area Panama-Costa Rica and Panama City) some interesting plate tectonics going on there and the odd volcano a.o a currently sleeping beauty called Volcán Barú.
The entire area South of the volcano is coved with huge rocks, scattered all over the landscape, along the road to the town of David.

He does have some nice graphics tools and I’ll likely explore the site for ideas on where to get interesting data, but when someone is saying “USGS is hiding data”, well, you may want to put a disclaimer on it when you post up their video… Something like “Nice site, interesting tools, odd conspiracy theory that seems a bit kooky to me, but the data does look a bit off.”
I grew up near mount Lassen. We used to go out and sit on the boulders oustide town that had been blown there by the volcano. Old Folks mentioned that eruption in 1914 (just about 40 years before I was born so ‘recent’ when I was a kid; but somehow just didn’t quite manage to mention that those particular rocks were not from that particular eruption ;-)
I miss my volcano…
Maybe I can find one with some rumbly going on and “cheap dirt” for sale ;-)
Suggestion:
If you move somewhere close to a volcano: rent.
Keep the stuff you really care about in a motor home. (or like jewlery in a quick and easy to grab box you can stick in the motor home in under 5 minutes).
If things start going weird, you just drive away.
Yeah, you need to buy new pots & pans, clothes, TV and furniture. So what? … the photos, favorite books, et al are with you… and you just find another place to rent…
I’d love to rent a “little grass shack and mini-farm” on the side of a volcano under those terms…

I have a Mother In Law that has anchored the SWIMBO here. So until the MIL(stone) is gone, I’m stuck. We both believed in the the “till death” part… so I’m not going to Panama alone…
For now I have a micro-farm in the back yard. The “herd” is ‘free range bunnies” and I’ve got a “lower 40″… it’s just ‘sq ft’ instead of acres 8-{
Sometimes you just get to ‘make do’… (and now you know why I watch so eagerly for a great quake here … “Sorry dear, but their’s no choice, we have to move.” ;-)

You’re not the only one hoping the big one to defeat MIL stones. Hell, I even know people who rather went to war than facing the Mill Stone.
I solved the problem with a few airline tickets and an open offer to ‘move’ with me.
It bought me my freedom and put the decision process in the Mill stone camp.
In the real world I found that moving to another place on the planet is just a psychological barrier to overcome.
1. We have Skype to Skype today which enables a person to have face to face contact from virtually every place in the world for free.
30 years ago I had to spend fortunes on communication, car phones and office costs to do business and keep in touch with the home front.
Today, thanks to the internet and Skype these costs are practically zero and the entire office has been eliminated.
2. 30 years ago it cost me a small fortune to simply fly from Frankfurt to London. Today it is cheaper than than a bus ticket.
If necessary you travel from Panama to the USA in 3.5 hours for a few hundred US dollars. That’s how far away you are from the ‘Mill Stone’.
A friend of mine who thinks he can’t leave his country because he has shared custody of his daughter travels over four hours every two weeks to collect his kid for a weekend and he spends more money on local traveling than another friend of mine who went to live in Spain coping with a similar problem.
His kids take a 3.5 hour flight and have a ball every time thy visit their dad.
What I mean to say is that the world has become a small place and if you select a location with good communication infra structure like internet and you are not to far away from an airport you are often closer to the old home stead than most of your family members.
Really, the threshold to live somewhere else today is more about overcoming a psychological threshold.
I still remember the first time I went abroad.
Family members gathering at the airport saying good bye, mother crying.
Today I do a business trip to Russia and the Middle East
and the family is bored to hear about it.

Yeah, I’ve sporadically had my little “reorient” feeling that says a quake is coming or happened… and the DSL box has been resetting more than normal (yes, it’s become an indicator for me now ;-)
The bulk of the action is down at the San Diego / LA end of things, but there also that “odd cluster” at the spreading zone point north of Mammoth “Lakes” on the Cal Neva border. On this map here:

My “sense of it” is that California is just splitting a little bit more off from the rest of the continental plate (in a few million years we’ll notice ;-) and the “east bay” faults are “loading up” for their “big one”. I think it is “coming soon” (which in geological terms could be any time this century ;-)
