GHCN v3 First Data

OK, I’ve gotten all the GHCN v3 data unpacked. I’ve also gotten my lmyears and dotemps programs and scripts adapted to it. (They have added a 1/100 C position on the individual temperature data items… incredibly optimistic, if you ask me, and even if the PRESENT electronic thermometers can report that, you are comparing to old data that does not have it. Oh, and what about the error bands on those new electronic thermometers?…)

There is also a new ‘flag’ of some sort just after each temperature data item. I’ve not found out what it is, yet, but suspect it tell something about how that data item was created. (They no long give temperatures for an instrument, but rather a synthesized thing made from whatever records they have, with a bunch of adjusting and homoginizing/QA prebaked…)

Don’t yet have dT/dt adapted to it, but the first bits of data from dotemps are interesting enough. In general “Things Change”. Not a lot, just a little. An individual thermometer only has a tiny bit of change, but the country of Ireland has more thermometers added in a few years, and the data in general are more “squirmy” when doing a side by side A/B. I open two windows with each report aligned, then just click between them. Changed areas of one or two data items show up as a small ‘flicker’ while lots of changes show up as a kind of ‘squirm’ where several 2 digit fields become single digit and various small .x numbers shift. Partly I’m posting these data here, rather than in the prior posting, so you can open two windows side by side to compare them yourself.

Why am I not “plotting these up”? Because right now I’m in “code making” mode, not “pretty presentation” mode. Feel free to “graph things up” yourself if you like. I’ll eventually get to it (though only after dT/dt is running… it does a compare less influenced by splice artifacts from individual thermometer changes.) These comparisons of the dotemps reports show the degree of “cruft” in the data. How much ‘bias’ and splice artifact the “magic sauce” in various codes like GIStemp and HADcrut have to remove. The dT/dt code has little to no splice artifact or homogenizing artifacts to remove, so shows what is actually happening with individual thermometers. (It does an anomaly process on EACH thermometer record as the very first step, unlike GIStemp et. al. who do it at the end. Now that v3 merges records before you every see the individual records, there is no way to properly do anomalies as the first step.)

So I’ll be porting dT/dt next, and then finding interesting differences. THEN I’ll go for pretty pictures ;-)

I’m just going to put the v3 results here, and my observations of the “A/B”, without a lot of detail. Folks can do their own detailed A/B if they like by looking back at the prior posting:

Ireland

For the individual station data for VALENTIA OBSERVATORY doesn’t change much, just a little. The v2 and v3 reports match until 1949, then the v2 data is 11.8 and v3 is 12.1 C. For 1948 the change is from 10.8 to 11.0 C. Throughout the ’60s area of the reports there’s a lot of “squirm” as things change, yet the totals don’t change much. In the early 1990s several missing data fields are retroactively filled. (Those -99 missing data flags go away). In general, there is some “squirm” in the reports, but not too much change in the totals. (Then again, a couple of 1/10 C matters, per the Warmers… so a detail comparison will be done, just ‘later’).

How about for the whole of Ireland?

This is the v3 data for all of Ireland, averaged. On the very far right edge is the count of thermometers (though, as some amount of merging of records is already done in v3, that’s a bit less informative that it was in the past). There is more change in the later years, here. This is in keeping with the way that thermometers in use constantly mutates. There is a peculiar tendency to add thermometers in years ‘just a few ago’ but still have the drop off in recent years to a selected subset. Just asking for uncorrectable spice artifacts, IMHO.

In 1871 we get a 1/10 C rise in the totals. (June rose by 1/10 C. Go figure…) A couple of years just above it have similar summer changes, but the totals don’t change as they offset. ( 1959-60 has similar changes about September). In general, just modest 1/10 C in the totals, a bit more in some years in individual data.

The biggest changes come in 1990 when we have changes in thermometer counts again. IMHO, that’s the major problems throughout all of the GHCN (and similar) data sets. When the thermometer counts change, the averages change a lot, and then we are depending entirely on the various codes to “clean it up”.

In some ways I find this set more interesting. There is a fair amount of ‘squirm’ though it, and to a first visual, it looks like a bit more cooling in the past, a bit more warming in the present. Now that data end in 1994 in both cases, and it is always just ONE thermometer; so this is simply re-writing the past. Why? Is it justified? How many other places are like this? What is the impact?

New Zealand

Picks up some data from prior to 1880 back to 1964.

Fair amount of ‘squirm’ in the early years, but not a lot of change to the totals.

About 1946, things really start warming …. !958 is interesting as the thermometer count does not change, but the total goes from 12.6 to 12.9 C. That’s 3/10 C in what is supposed to be a stable set of thermometers and a small grid area. 2007 goes from 13.0 C to 13.6 C on the same thermometer count. Now that’s Global Warming! ;-)

In Conclusion

Well, it’s pretty clear to me that there’s something here to “Dig Here!” about.

It varies by location, and most strongly with station count changes; but some places warm without thermometer count changes.

So I’ll be ‘moving on’ to the dT/dt code to figure out exactly what and where is doing the ‘cooking’ of the globe out of the changes in the data.

Between now and then, I’ll be making some similar “A/B” reports on different countries or regions to look for any places with lots of change (as they are most likely to be ‘fruitful’…)

If anything really interesting pops up, I’ll post the data for folks to play with.

  1. Peter O'Neill says:

“There is also a new ‘flag’ of some sort just after each temperature data item. I’ve not found out what it is, yet, but suspect it tell something about how that data item was created.”

See ftp://ftp.ncdc.noaa.gov/pub/data/ghcn/v3/README for explanation of the three flags, and other details. I’ve written a small utility to compare different versions of the GHCN v3 monthly data files, showing the data lines for years where any monthly value differs by more than a specified value, or where a missing month in one file is matched by a value present in the other file. This can be filtered to show differences only for a specified country or range of countries. Useful for example to see how the February 17 version I mentioned differs from other versions as regards Irish and UK stations. E-mail me if you would find it useful.

    @Peter O’Neill:

Always interested in seeing how other folks are looking at things and learning from their code.

Email address is in words in the “donate” box at the right side.

  3. Radovan Korda says:

Are you sure that it is New Zealand temperatures look 10C too high

  4. Seems like you put about the Samoan data up twice.

The GW scam was just one of the many tactics for attaining “global governance”. Things work like this: You go after temperatures to show these are “massaged”, while they are massaging you in many other ways, through the many UN´s organizations and NGO´s. It would seem that they won already the game, however Big Programmer has decided to take a antibiotic which kills these pesky bugs which are causing him a diarrhea. Mayans were studying the primeval code to understand Big Programmer´s will so we could know in advance when silly bugs´virus creation to meddle into Big Programmer´s software was going to be deleted.

It says 541 at the bottom, so my “cut / paste” had the “cut” fail and the prior clipboard got pasted in. Going too fast and with dinner prep calling, didn’t do my QA “check everything twice”. (Why I hate being “pushed” and “taking interrupts”…)

I’m getting the correct New Zealand table to paste in…

    Sorry about that.

  7. E.M.Smith says:

    OK, it’s fixed now.

Every so often, for reasons I’ve not sorted out ( maybe the PC, maybe the mouse, maybe my fat thumb hitting the wrong mouse key or a finger touching the pad that thinks that is a mouse click… I hate “tapping”…) a “copy” part of a “copy / paste” doesn’t pick up the data that I’ve marked and thought I had said to copy.

Generally I’ve gotten in the habit of reading everything twice over to be sure, and each report is ‘tagged’ with the country code at the bottom in the original production of it (so things can’t be ambiguous later and for QA checks to catch things, like now); but every so often someone is hollering that it’s time for dinner or why am I not getting ready for “whatever”, and I’ll think “all I need to do is paste this in and be done.”.

It works out well often enough that I’ll “take the risk” sometimes. Then a “failure to copy” comes along and the “paste” is not what it was thought to be….

The “good news” is that the description was correct. I was doing an A/B of New Zealand. Just the “paste” was bogus.

OK, fixed now, and thanks to folks for spotting it.
