## GHCN v1 vs V3 1990 to date Anomalies

### How To Change The Past

In One Easy Lesson

He who controls the thermometers in the past, controls the present.

This one little graph embodies several dozen hours of work. The software to make it was built some years back and took some weeks to make then. The data for v1 was saved a couple of years ago (NCDC seems to have ‘disappeared’ it from their web site now, so only folks who thought to save a copy years back will have it to compare. Though if anyone knows where it might still exist on line, that would be nice to know). All in all, there’s several weeks of my life, spread out over a couple of years, in this one graph.

What it shows is pretty simple (though making the code to do it was a bit of work). It shows how the thermometers selected to be in GHCN Version One (v1) when compared to the thermometers selected to be in GHCN Version Three (v3) have changed the degree of “warming” embodied in the data sets. So first off, just look at it. I’ll give a run down of how I made it below the graph. There are 3 lines. The v1 “dT” line is just the average of ALL thermometer anomalies in the v1 data set. The v3 “dT” line is the same thing for the v3 data set.

BOTH of these are supposed to represent exactly the same period of time, as I have truncated the v3 data to 1990. BOTH were / are asserted to be the same “high quality data” and BOTH are supposed to be telling us the degree to which the world as “Warmed” due to Global Warming. They both cover the entire globe and consist of ALL data in the GHCN for those years.

One Small Problem. They tell very different stories.

The third line is the difference between the two. V3 minus v1 (so if V3 is ‘warmer’ then the value will be positive). That’s the thick red line. The first thing to notice is that it is below zero in the far past, and above zero in the recent decades. The data in v3 have been shifted relative to the data in v1 to make the past colder and the nearer years warmer.

The v1 line is the thin blue one and the v3 line is the then orange one. You can see orange is below blue in the past and above it recently.

The really surprising bit is the distant past. In those time periods there were very few thermometers. The record starts with only one, eventually rising to the double digits only after many years. What this graph says is that those records have been “adjusted” in some way. Now I don’t know what could possibly be done to rewrite the temperature in 1750 or how one could possibly imagine they could be more accurate looking back through 260 years of time than the person who was standing at the instrument when it was being read (often the person who made if for those early readings. Folks like Newton and Galileo made their own thermometers in those early years) but I have to wonder if it is not more “wishful thinking” to change those data than actual science.

At least, when I took Chemistry and Physics, it was an “Automatic F” to make an erasure in your lab book. Original data were taken down and recorded in the book, and never ever under any circumstances erased and re-written. To do so was to flunk on the spot.

But “climate science” is different. They erase and smudge and fudge and re-write seemingly at will.

So look especially at the far right of the graph and ask just what could justify those changes?

As we get to the 1880 era, the number of thermometers rise such that the selection of which thermometer is in and which is out can begin to have an impact. The temperature history can be sculpted by choosing which thermometers to splice with which other thermometers. IMHO a great deal of “Global Warming” is nothing more than “splice artifacts” in the data. Some “computer codes” will be much more sensitive to “splice artifacts” than others. (Like spicing the recent thermometer record onto old tree ring data to create a “Hockey Stick” graph where there is none in the actual temperature series.)

### The Method

The method used is what I have called the dT/dt method. It is nothing more than a variation of First Differences. Older posts in this series, including the original descriptions of the code and method, are in the category by that name:

Each thermometer record is compared ONLY to itself. If there is missing data, the code just waits until a new data item does show up, then finds the difference. Nothing is created out of thin air. No interpolation nor ‘infilling’ is done. The First Difference is taken between the latest reading (for v1) and the prior reading. This is repeated back though time to the beginning of that thermometer record. In this way, any ‘strange values’ from an old thermometer in 1720 will have no impact on the recent comparisons. The thesis is just that the most recent data are reputedly the best and most accurate, so will not be introducing a persistent bias to the comparison.

In this way each “Anomaly Series” is as accurate and pure as it can possibly be. A thermometer only ever compared with itself, and with the starting point being the best data available from the most recent times.

The only exception to this is that for v3, to assure that the “start of data” did not bias the comparison in any way, I only used data from 1990 and before for it, as well. In this way identical time periods can be compared with the same method and substantially the same code. (The two data files have slight differences in format, so the code can not be identical. One uses 1/10 C while the other uses 1/100 C, for example. But in function and most of the actual text of the code, they match).

I first match the “Inventory” Meta Data to each thermometer (they are stored in different files in GHCN); but that step is not used in this particular code. I match the metadata to each record, but only use the front part of the record for the calculations. That part with station ID and temperatures. These records get selected for 1990 or older for v3, or all data for v1, then sorted into the proper order for reporting. The dT/dt code turns that data into “anomalies” in the manner described above. Then the resulting ‘.dt’ type file can be used by many different report writers to produce a variety of different reports, as desired. So, for example, I have 4 scripts written to select Northern Hemisphere or Southern Hemisphere for either v1 or v3 and do similar reports to this one. I can also select by continent or by individual country code. (So, for example, I can show if Australia has “warmed” a lot while nearby Indonesia has not warmed their data). Those kinds of more detailed graphs will be ‘coming soon’. For now, though, the interesting bit was just “what does the aggregate say?”

I’ll post the code blocks for this process so anyone who wishes can check the work. Realize, though, that they were ‘re-purposed’ from earlier versions so have not yet had their “preening and pretty printing”. Some variables may, for example, be described as what they did before, not what they are doing now. Software is like that… much more often than most folks realize.

I’ve also made a shorter version of the graph. This one starts in 1880, so chops off a long history, but one that is largely ignored by the folks at Hadley CRU and NASA GISS. They like to “start time” in 1850 to 1880, just after the Little Ice Age. (When we look at those oldest temperature series from individual quality sites, we see that it was about as warm in 1720 as it is today. The ‘warming’ comes from choosing to start at a cold excursion and choosing when to splice in other instruments, IMHO.) So here’s a shorter version. It still shows the same artifacts of data manicuring with a colder past (thought a bit less so) and a warmer present.

That stability of the graph is an essential character of the dT/dt method. Since it starts with the most recent data and runs backward in time, chopping off the oldest data does not change the shape or readings on the graph.

Here you can see that prior to about 1890 the data, though a bit more ‘spiky’ from fewer thermometers, have been cooled by about 1/4 C with only significant spikes rising above the zero line. After that date, the v3-v1 delta line rises above zero, smooths out, and holds about 1/4 C of steady warming. This also shows up in the thin orange v3 line being substantially below the blue v1 line in the past, and clearly riding above it in the present. Because of the way the method works, by definition 1990 is “zero” for all lines, so they converge again there.

Realize that the 1/4 to 1/2 C of “warming” seen here is entirely due to changes made to the data set. This is not warming of the planet. We are comparing 2 versions of what are supposedly the same data and finding a greater slope of “warming” in those records chosen to be in v3 when compared to those chosen to be in v1. As to how justified that re-selection and re-adjusting might be; that I do not address. ( Though I do hold to the old school belief that the past ought not change and that once data are collected in the lab book, they are NEVER erased nor rewritten. At most, a single thin line may be drawn through them and a note added describing in what way the reading was defective; then the new value added in a note. Anything else, and Mr. McGuire would flunk you. Just as I would flunk NCDC for what they do. But that’s because I’m not a “Climate Scientist”, I’m just an old school kitchen scientist… )

### The Bits and Bytes

Here are the two reports from which I extracted the data to make those graphs. Realize that the sign on dT in these reports is reversed from that in the graph. They show what it takes to move forward in time from that year, so a “+1.2” means you need to add 1.2 C to get to the next year (or conversely, that the year in question is 1.2 C colder than the next year). Also note that the monthly anomalies do not add up to the dT/yr value as that is an Average of them, not a sum. There are also slight rounding bits not on the report, so the first 1.3 is actually 1.25 and rounded up. If you really want to get into that level of ‘cross foot proof’, I can make a version that prints out more un-rounded numbers…

### In Conclusion

As this is already way long, and it’s 3:33 AM, and I could use some sleep, and I met my goal of a broad v1 vs v3 comparison of ‘like vs like’ by June 1: I’m going to leave off now. I’ll put the code up in a distinct posting in the next day or two. I’ll also do the two hemisphere compares and likely a few continent compares.

Beyond that will depend on what looks interesting and what folks want to see. I could, with a fair amount of work, tie v3 to 1990 and have the 1991-2011 part on the same graph. (The code at present starts at an end, not in the middle, so that’s a non-trivial change to make…) Doing an A/B of, oh, New Zealand is trivial in comparison.

At any rate, that’s where I’m at for now. I’ll check the email and have coffee before doing anything more… but that will be after sleeping until I wake up ;-)

(And I am not saying that the task was simple, merely that the concept is so simple and clear that it is hard to see how it could be misinterpreted or misrepresented.) My hope is that some of the fence sitters will see your work here and realize where the truth lies. Yes, there is always the faint (approaching zero) chance that the “climate scientists” have some secret manuscript that gave them plausible reason to reinterpret past readings, but unless they show — publicly and clearly — what their rationale was, then unbiased observers must judge that the “updated” trends are not science, but rather fraud. As for the true CAGW believers, I have spoken with some and tried explaining ways in which the presented data has been corrupted. They seem, sadly, to literally not understand the concept. “Well, they wouldn’t have changed anything unless they had a good reason to. After all, they are SCIENTISTS!”

This is “March of the Thermometers” version 2.0. I just hope that it gains more widespread coverage. Good work, Chiefio. I continue to be impressed. It may be true that there are no indispensable men, but you give the best imitation of it I can think of.

By the way, what is going on with v3 during the period from roughly 1852 to 1872? I know that the eye often sees patterns in noise, but v1 seems pretty normal for that period, while v3 seems to have a periodic, odd double peak sort of shape. What sort of adjustment would cause that?

The data points to a simple, irrefutable conclusion: the West is falling, the East is rising. (the East has to be rising, even if they’re standing still, right?;-)

I would assume that everything recorded before ~1970 must be in hardcopy somewhere; i.e. hand written. Would be interesting to obtain those records to spot check to see which series; I think we already know the answer, is more accurate. Is there any type of reference listing for the data sources? Fabulous work EM.

A very big thank you for this posting. I commented the other day that your earlier magnum opus was used in evidence to the Muir Russell enquiry – where, like all the other evidence, it was ignored. I am printing your post so that I can have a long hard stare at it.

When you posted your earlier effort country by country, you noted some odd differences. The records of the Guayanas in S America revealed unexpected differences for example. (British Guayana temps increased, but French and Dutch Guyana were more or less flat). Germany, IIRC, was flat through the period, whereas the UK revealed an increasing temperature trend. Indeed there was a suspicion of bias towards increases in the English speaking countries! no doubt there are others I cannot recall now. When you have the time, it might be worth revisiting some those anomalies to see what, if anything, has changed.

The whole global warming thing drives me crazy, especially when scientific journals keep mentioning the impact of global warming in their various stories. They treat it as an irrefutable fact.

As I understand it, the original paper records for the USA were left to literally rot in a poor warehouse. There was some talk of trying to recover them, but don’t know where it got to.

Hadley CRU was originally set up specifically to archive the original data. We can all see how that has turned out as they have “lost their original data” and “only kept the ‘value added’ data”…

I suspect that the original will be very hard to ever recover.

Per the spikes: IMHO it is likely “offsetting adjustments” that let you show an AVERAGE non-biased adjustment, but where the “splice artifact” gives a “lift” to the curves. No, no proof. Just in keeping with what I think is the ‘method’… Over average things that don’t matter, hide the bits that do, get the lift out of a mix of ‘adjustments’ spread in time and space and use curves that start low and end high for each segment (careful choice of end shapes) so that splice artifacts add.

This is just about two data sets, not the actual changes in the real world ;-)

@Oldtimer:

France, too, and especially the French foreign lands, didn’t rise much. Yes, clearly an “Anglophone” bias to warming ;-) Some Latin countries also had a language barrier…

I’m going to repeat (now that the tools are built) the same “country by country” kind of analysis, but it will be slow. There are still some hand processing steps, like the graph making, so gets ‘wedged in’ when I have enough money to do what I want instead of what I must.

I think we’ll find that an A/B of those “static” countries will show more changes recently, as the GHCN gets more “manicured” at NCDC and depends less on individual country Met Office adjustments.

If you recall, the Turkey Met Office found cooling and that the GHCN had harvested only the warming thermometers for their set…

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the variations and trends in the long-term annual mean air temperatures by using graphical and statistical time-series methods. The study covers a 63-year period starting from 1930 and uses temperature records from 85 climate stations. First, spatial distributions of the annual mean temperatures and coefficients of variation are studied in order to show normal conditions of the long-term annual mean temperatures. Then variations and trends observed in the annual mean temperatures are investigated using temperature data from 71 climate stations and regional mean series. Various non-parametric tests are used to detect abrupt changes and trends in the long-term mean temperatures of both geographical regions within Turkey and individual stations. The analyses indicate some noticeable variations and significant trends in the long-term annual mean temperatures. Among the geographical regions, only Eastern Anatolia appears to show similar behaviour to the global warming trends, except in the last 5 years. All the coastal regions, however, are characterized by cooling trends in the last two decades. Considering the results of the statistical tests applied to the 71 individual stations data, it could be concluded that annual mean temperatures are generally dominated by a cooling tendency in Turkey. The coldest years of the temperature records of the majority of the stations were 1933 and 1992, respectively.

It is my poster child for “warming via thermometer birth control”…

I’m still thinking of writing up the dT/dt code / method as a paper, but once something is already published, they don’t like to accept it; and frankly, I’d rather get it done here now than never there… as the Peer Review is so strongly Pal Review…

But I have a couple of ideas that yet may make it to “publication”. Just not enough time to do them as I’m also Chief Chef and Bottle Washer at home…

A minor clarification note on the need to invert the sign on the dT column. It was originally written to say “How much have we warmed from that year to date?” That is, the Delta T to get here from there. So a positive value means it was cooler then. Needed to invert the sign to make it “How cold was it THEN compared to now?”

I’ll likely make a new version of the code to directly produce the “Temp then anomaly” as I make more of these graphs. It will save me making a spreadsheet with a “Take that column and multiply by -1” for each graph…

Change a minus to a plus in two lines of code where the running total is kept, change some names to the same file doesn’t hold inverted sense. Name things with dP/dt for “Delta to the Past / delta time” and it’s done.

So here are the two output reports for v1 and v3 showing the “delta Past” output. In these, the running total is “how does that year compare to today?” as in the graphs above.

The programs also kick out a comma separated list of just the first three columns, so to make the above graphs it’s a pretty easy “suck into OO spreadsheet and graph” without the need to do a sign inversion first to make it “how the past relates to today” instead of “how much has today ‘warmed’ compared to then”.

Time to make some continent graphs… They will be dP/dt based.

I’ll clean up the comments in the dP/dt code and post it in the next day or two, as well.

In Australia the HQ Data that I have access to (from BOM.gov.au) has been ‘Homogenised’ i.e. it has been ‘adjusted’ in a way that results in depression of early temperatures in rural sites and inflation of early temperatures in city sites. Has this been done to GCH1 or HCH3 or are you looking at the raw data from any specific site?

Not sure what I can add to that other than “If you don’t have chain of custody and modification history, you have no evidence.”…

It’s clear from the v1 to v3 variation, though, that “things are not stable”.

So you get to pick one:

1) Malice: Folks are deliberately cooking the books.

2) Stupidity: The data are so variable that 1/2 C is inside the variation just from one copy to the next of the “Same” data set. Nothing can be concluded from it as the data set is stupid trash.

I’ll wait while the Warmistas huddle and decide what to pick…
