Turkey – Coup attempt

Hit the TV news folks. Looks like an attempted coup underway in Turkey.

Wonder how this will impact their entry into the E.U. ;-)

A military coup appeared to be underway in Turkey Friday evening as gunshots were reported in the capital, Ankara, and soldiers closed off two key bridges in Istanbul.

Reuters, citing a witness, reported that military jets and helicopters were seen flying overhead in both Ankara and Istanbul.

Turkey’s prime minister, Binali Yildirim, said that a “coup attempt” by factions within the military was in progress and vowed that the country’s security forces would “uphold democracy.”
[…]
There were no immediate reports of any casualties and there was no official statement from the Turkish government.

Meanwhile, private broadcaster NTV reported that both bridges across the Bosphorus strait, which separates Europe and Asia, had been closed to traffic.

  1. Larry Ledwick says:

    This is an interesting twist apparently the group involved with the coup has connections to the Clinton machine.

  2. R. de Haan says:

    Army always supported the secular road of Attaturks heritage.
    It will be clear that many Turks are fed-up with Erdogans Islamic adventures, his totalitarian character and his betrayal of the Kurds.
    Besides that he and his family are robbing the country blind.
    The EU will be glad to continue any of the current treatments, especially the deal made about the refugees.
    The expansionist agenda for now is off the table.

  4. E.M.Smith says:

    Maybe not a fait accompli just yet… FOX showing video of “people in the streets” after Erdogan called for that… Both sides claiming they have won, so not clear yet…

    Also, Erdogan had loaded part of the Military with his own hand picked folks (tossing out the old guard, sometimes via trumped up charges…) so at present there are “sort of two armies” in Turkey…

    I suspect this will get more interesting as the night wears on…

    Interesting catch on the Clinton connection… There’s some pretty strong evidence for various Islamic Countries to try to buy the president of their choice in a couple of ways, with H. R. Clinton (Her Royal Clinton?) being the most obvious money… (Others via “corporate” donations… so nominally “U.S. sourced”…) Both parties, too.

    And folks wonder why Trump got so much support with his “I’m not bought” approach… and Bernie too.

    Understand: what secular Turks are fighting for is what we revolted over. Our gov’t is siding with the tyrant over the democrat.

  6. R. Shearer says:

    I hope that our nuclear weapons there are secure.

  7. E.M.Smith says:

    @R. Shearer:

    They are surrounded by a whole bunch of US Military… IF things get at all “dodgy”, I expect they would be flown out with massive air cover.

    @All:

    Some of the “street scenes” show crowds mobbing tanks and military positions, with “special police” in some others “escorting” soldiers off to {an undisclosed location…} while others show places controlled by the military.

    Each side issuing claims to be in control…

  8. p.g.sharrow says:

    It would appear that the Muslim Brotherhood that has been taking over Turkey is being turned back by the Military. We shall see if the results are the same as in Egypt. Meanwhile our leaders continue to work for the Brotherhood! Both the Clintons as well as the Obamanation demand that the Muslim Brotherhood are the rightful democratic leaders of Turkey and want them to be empowered.
    Very soon, the is turning against the Warlords and their G.E.B. funders…pg

    FYI Istanbul is 7 hours ahead of New York for reference, 4:05 AM in Istanbul, 9:05 PM in New York

    Looks like things are still not sorted out, CNN Turkey reporting civilians have entered their building and a struggle is going on.

  10. tom0mason says:

    BBC radio report has a man on the ground saying that Erdogan arrived back into Istanbul and has appeared on state TV broadcasting from Attaturk Airport.
    BBC reports that Erdogan says the coup was stirred-up by US based cleric called Fethullah Gulen. He says that these military threaten both himself personally and the Turkish people. He said that the military had bombed the resort he was staying at in an attempt to assassinate him.
    Repeated many times that Gulen sympathizers were at its root.
    Again he has called for the public to come on to the streets in protest. And calls on the military to purge these Gulen sympathizer from their ranks. He has then taken questions from the reporter.

    He appears confident but he said he was surprised that this attempt had been made now, while the country was fighting the terrorist, and while he was on vacation.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Ties in with Larry’s report above.
  11. Larry Ledwick says:
    Perfect grounds to crush the Gulen movement in Turkey, could even be a false flag effort given damage has been relatively light from what I have seen. Might be Erdogan’s burning of the Reichstag moment.
  12. E.M.Smith says:
    I guess we’ll need to look for evidence of scripted or wooden aspects to the coup and response. Things like conveniently not being at the resort when bombed. Need to know how many killed and is there a shortage of officials in that count… Was the rapid TV access done in keeping with normal blocking of TV in a coup? etc. If faked, there will be loose ends, or just too much too “lucky”…
  13. E.M.Smith says:
    MSNBC showing Erdogan in a huge crowd at the airport…
    Would require a massacre to get him via air, which was likely the point…
    Going to be hard for the coup not to fail. Mighty “lucky” for him…
  14. Larry Ledwick says:
    From twitter
    “Erdogan says this insurgency “is a blessing from Allah, because it will allow us to purge the military” from mutineers.”
    “Erdogan says those who staged a coup attempt will pay the highest price, will answer for this treason.”
    Many commentators describe the coup attempt as “staged” after Erdogan calls it a “gift from Allah.”
    US defence official: Turkey closed airspace around Incirlik airbase, preventing anti-#ISIS coalition’s air campaign
  15. E.M.Smith says:
    Given Obama’s endorsement of Erdogan, I have to wonder if our sig-int assets in country gave Erdogan a ‘bug out’ call just before the bomber arrived… Just sayin’…
  16. Larry Ledwick says:
    From Conflict news on Twitter a current tally
    192 dead
    1,400+ injured
    3,000+ soldiers arrested
    2,700+ Judges arrested
    US defense official: Turkey closed airspace around Incirlik airbase, preventing anti-ISIS coalition’s air campaign
    At same time ISIS claims advances against SDF & YPG north of Raqqa Syria
  17. Larry Ledwick says:
    I find the item about judges arrested the most interesting, and possible confirmation that this is cover for a purge of anti Erdogan people.
  18. J Martin says:
    Puzzling attempt at a coup. Nowhere near enough troops and resources. So unless they were hoping to inspire the rest of the army to join them, then it was bound to fail. Since they didn’t have overwhelming resources a traditional style coup of take over the country while the president is on holiday won’t work. Instead you have to target and ‘neutralise’ the president.
    Apparently the arrested soldiers thought they were on a training exercise. So all things considered it looks like the whole thing was a setup by the ruthless dictator Erdogan. A false flag event.
  19. tom0mason says:
    From what I heard on the BBC WS at the time, Erdogan flew into the airport just as the TV studio ‘lost’ rebel control.
    His speech got broadcast but during the questions from reporters, at the end of his time on the ground the broadcast was cut allegedly by the rogue military.
    Strange timing of events … maybe
  20. David A says:
    Yes such a quick arrest of thusands of judges??? If you know the details of their involvement in two days, how did you not know beforehand?
    Also what kind of military overthrow does not kill the head of the snake as their first act?
  21. David A says:
    Is the US military base still shut down?
  22. p.g.sharrow says:
    Yes, it appears that failing to capture Egypt, the Muslim Brotherhood have gained the upper hand in Turkey. Turkey has a real military, so this is a big deal. Turkey and the Brotherhood against the Iranians and Russians. Sounds like WWIII is getting serious. If I was playing this game, I would back out of the area and launch a 3rd front to subjugate the Muslims in the west while I figured out the next step.
    The Fate of Trump and Putin are the key in the next step as GOD has a hand to play.
    We live in interesting times…pg
  23. Larry Ledwick says:
    Coup was staged to humiliate the military and weaken their public support according to this source.
  24. Larry Ledwick says:
    A little background on one of the apparent players in the Turkish coup.
    http://takimag.com/article/the_shadowy_imam_of_the_poconos_steve_sailer#axzz4EkIrvJi1
    From twitter – Conflict News @Conflicts
    TURKEY: Almost every major unit in the Turkish army has lost their commander after (the coup)
    7,850 police officers sacked, not detained and weapons confiscated over night in Turkey
    (They clearly had lists made up ahead of time on who was to be picked up — tally so far)
    – 3,000+ soldiers/high ranking officers
    – 7,850 police officers
    – 2,745 judges
    – Higher Education Board meeting soon
    It is interesting to note that they did pretty much the same thing in Iran after their coup. Looks like secular Turkey is going away to be replaced by a more Islamist Turkey.
    This also explains why Erdogan suddenly made peace with Russia a few days ago, needed to get rid of that distraction before he gutted his military. (or maybe that was all show and tell and Russia has a seat at the table on this deal??)
  25. Larry Ledwick says:
    From twitter – Conflict News @Conflicts
    Turkey detains 103 generals and admirals in total after coup: state media.
    So this ranks up there with Stalin’s purge of the Soviet Military prior to the early lead up to WWII.
    It will totally change the character of their military as defender of Secular Turkey, and suddenly shift a major NATO nation into the strongly Islamic camp and perhaps remove them as a staging location for the U.S. and Incirlik.
  26. Gail Combs says:
    Of interest:
    (1) Erdogan managed to get on the airwaves and instruct the Imans to do a Call for Prayer and flood the streets with the ‘faithful’ to combat the military.
    Erdogan earlier commented on the term ‘moderate Islam’ often used by the Politically Correct Snowflakes to describe Muslims who aren’t terrorists. Erdogan said, “These descriptions are very ugly, it is offensive and an insult to our religion. There is no moderate or immoderate Islam. Islam is Islam and that’s it.”
    (wwwDOT)barenakedislam.com/2013/10/20/muslim-speaker-admits-there-is-no-radical-islam-islam-is-islam/
    (2) France to shut down up to 160 mosques used as terror centers
    French interior minister Cazeneuve reported, “In 15 days we have seized one third of the quantity of war-grade weapons that are normally seized in a year.” …In addition, 2,235 Muslim businesses and homes have been searched. There have been 232 arrests…
    So much for gun laws protecting people. Note the weapon used in Paris was traced back to Fast and Furious.
    (3) Saudi Prince Pledges $32 Billion to Promote Islam/Sharia in America – Pam Geller:
    Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, a senior member of the Saudi monarchy, says he’ll pledge his $32 billion to advance the islamization of America. This is a MOAB (mother of all bombs) in the information battle-space. Looks as if I will be keeping busy for quite some time.
    The Saudis have spent billions already. 80% of the mosques build in America are Saudi funded. Islamic groups working to impose the sharia are largely funded by the Saudis.
    We can look forward to 32 billion more of the “kingdom’s brand of Islam, while censoring criticism of Islam.”
    And it’s not just the media that is on the receiving end of this blood money, but also Muslim Brotherhood fronts like CAIR, which spend millions whining about how lucrative the “islamophobia” business is….
    As Trump has said, we are looking at a Trojan Horse.
  27. Gail Combs says:
    I was looking for a picture of the islamic Trojan Horse and came upon this:
    https://oneway2day.wordpress.com/2014/03/12/radical-islam-shaking-moving-u-s-govt/
    It lists muslims in the US government. I understand from a commenter elsewhere that there are five high ranking people in the Department of Homeland Security that are muslims….
    Sort of explains this:
    Dr. Philip Haney DHS ordered me to scrub records of Muslims with terror ties
    ERRRRRrrr didn’t we get saddled with the PATRIOT Act, Grope-N-Fly and DHS because of MUSLIMS??? And now the US government is targeting Patriots and Nationalists NOT muslim terrorists. The occupier of the White House won’t even connect the words islam or muslim with the word terrorist. You just can’t make this up. A fiction book with this scenario would be tossed back at the author as unbelievable.
  28. Larry Ledwick says:
    The tally of the Purge in Turkey this morning from Conflict News on twitter. Obviously somebody had comprehensive lists of who to round up, or they have the most efficient bureaucracy in the world.
    Conflict News ‏@Conflicts 7 hours ago
    #TurkeyPurge
    – 30 provincial governors
    – 47 district governors
    – 8777 Interior Ministry staff (incl. police)
    – 2745 judges
    – 3000+ soldiers
  29. p.g.sharrow says:
    Yes, this appears to be a coup / purge by the Muslim Brotherhood over the Constitution of Turkey.
    Once again, the Turks have chosen to joined the forces of darkness against the civilized world.
    Once again, Warlords are plunging the world into their “Game of Thrones” lust for empire and power.
    We don’t need them. They are the enemy of humanity, not it’s Savior! They must be hunted down and eradicated.
    GOD will not permit Warlords access to true space travel. There is no Conquest between planets.
    Time for Humans to grow up if they want to evolve to become spacefarers ….pg
  32. E.M.Smith says:
    Well, at this point I have no idea where things will end up.
    It is pretty clear that there are “damn the constitution and traditions” movements in many countries, all pushing toward political domination of the people.
    This will keep Turkey out of the EU, but the EU is toast in any medium to long term.
    It will put Turkey IN the Islamist camp (though I’m not sure on which side… Sunni?)
    The US Bases in Turkey are now “large hostage holding area and spy R&R”…
    Sheesh.
    Making nice with Russia is looking better every week…
    Looking more and more like the “coup” is Erdogan over the Constitution and ALL Institutions guarding it… and a trivial scale “military coup” as just a kind of “false flag” moment.
    IMHO, Turkey is “gone”. It will be a ‘game changer’ for the EU, for NATO, for the Kurds, for Russia, for… and not least of which, the “Exemplar Moderate Modern Islam” will be the dust of history…
