Notes On Shootings, Homicides, and Gun Grabbers

Since the pwnd YSM (Yellow Stream Media) will once again be going into a tizzy over a death by gunfire, it is likely a good time to remind folks about the reality. That reality is that you are far more likely to have a homicide by Knife or even by bare HANDS than by an “assault rifle” (or any rifle).

I also must once again protest the ABSURD left wing lie of calling “ugly guns” “assault rifles” when they are not. The actual technical definition of an Assault Rifle is a gun that is, basically, a small sub-machine gun. Something that is very rare in America and requires a multiple $Hundred licence to posses. What The Lying Left has done is to codify in law, a lie, by defining “assault rifle” as a collection of irrelevant traits that they don’t like. Pistol grips, flash hiders, etc. I will call these Military STYLE semi-auto rifles as that is accurate. They are designed to LOOK LIKE but not function like their military counterparts.

So what’s the reality?

FBI Stats Show Knives Kill Far More People Than Rifles In America – It’s Not Even Close

Knives kill far more people in the United States than rifles do every year.
[…]
However, recent statistics from 2016 show that knives actually kill nearly five times as many people as rifles that year.

According to the FBI, 1,604 people were killed by “knives and cutting instruments” and 374 were killed by “rifles” in 2016.
[…]
The statistics match the trends seen in previous years, which show knife murders far outnumbering rifle statistics. In 2013, knives were used to kill 1,490 and rifles were used to kill 285.

Note: That is ALL Rifles. NOT just the Military Style semi-auto rifles. Those are much less.

In the article, it has a graph (I think from another year) showing the stats that includes the category “personal weapons (hands, feet, etc.) at 656 and “blunt objects (clubs, hammers, etc.) at 472 both ranking above ALL rifles at 374.

So hands, feet, hammers and clubs are far more a risk than any rifle at all, and way more than Military Style semi-auto rifles.

So where’s the politically driven cry for “Assault Hammer Ban!”? How about for registration of hands and feet? It really is that absurd. So the only reasonable conclusion is that this is all political hype to disarm the American population and demonize anyone who stands for classical values.

Writing on the issue of handgun violence, The Federalist makes this interesting point:

[…]
“But what about handgun murders?” you might ask. “They’re responsible for the majority of gun murders, so why don’t we just ban them and stop worrying about rifles?”

Easy: because gun bans and strict gun control don’t really prevent gun violence. Take, for example, Illinois and California. In 2013, there were 5,782 murders by handgun in the U.S. According to FBI data, 20 percent of those — 1,157 of the 5,782 handgun murders — happened in Illinois and California, which have two of the toughest state gun control regimes in the entire country. And even though California and Illinois contain about 16 percent of the nation’s population, those two states are responsible for over 20 percent of the nation’s handgun murders.

Ban or strongly restrict guns, get more murders. It really IS that simple. Yet there is more. When the general population is disarmed, more of the dead are the innocent. When the innocent are armed, the Bad Guy Perpetrator has much higher odds of being the (legitimate) homicide.

But now you know why it’s so stupid to try to “disarm” people. Karate was developed in response to a Weapons Ban in Okinawa by the occupying Japanese. My hands and feet are more likely to kill than my Military Style Semi-Auto rifle. As is my stealth Battle Hammer or any hammer really. In fact, in ancient times, more folks were killed with Battle Hammers than by sword. A 2 lb weight with about a 2 to 3 foot max length is best, BTW. We won’t even talk about my geology Rock Hammer REQUIRED by the University for my Geology classes:

This one is about ideal at 22 oz.

https://www.amazon.com/Estwing-Rock-Pick-Geological-Reduction/dp/B0002OVCMO

With practice, we could neatly punch both large and small drinking holes in the top of our soda cans (back before pull tabs…) and both the spike end and hammer end are lethal if necessary. Put a few broken rocks next to it on the car floor and have a geology text book or local geology field guide to complete the “story”. They also can be bought with a holster. Very useful when camping or venturing into “the wild” where a weapon looks odd, but saying “Oh, I’m into geology, have you seen any igneous outcrops?” is all it takes.

Rock Hammer

Rock Hammer

$22.44 at present. They also have a 14 oz version for those of smaller build, and you can get them with longer handles, like this one, that are even closer to ideal:

https://www.amazon.com/Estwing-Rock-Pick-Geological-Reduction/dp/B004F7JCBC/

In winter / snow conditions, the ice climbing axe and crampons are a better fit to the “story” of the moment, though a camping axe and camp stove / pup tent (good to have in cold weather driving anyway) also make a good “story”.

The point?

You can be STUPID and argue for disarmament, or realize that unless you run around chopping off hands and feet, banning anything heavy or sharp, and insisting nobody ever changes a tire, that’s an impossible task. (My long handle torque wrench with socket matching the wheels is always in my car, and about the same as a Battle Hammer…) And then remember that ALL rifles kill far fewer people than those things, and “Assault Rifles” are a vanishingly small part of “All rifles”; then think a minute and realize any “ban” of rifles is only a political act with no foundation in thought or reality.

Indeed. To my knowledge, the perp was angry at being snubbed by a girl. Such is life. Most guys get over it.

  2. gareth says:

Aaah, EM, I think that you are assuming that the “Assault Rifle” thing is about a misunderstanding of what they are trying to ban and why. Perhaps it’s just that “Assault Rifle” is the weakest point? If you were trying to Ban All Guns then would you not go for the edge cases and those with fewest defenders as the best path to your eventual goal?

  3. E.M.Smith says:

    @Gareth:

I think I said the necessary conclusion was that it was political and to disarm those with traditional values…

  4. Sandy McClintock says:

I hate plastic knives and forks for eating food; cutting meat with a plastic knife is hard particularly on a plane. Some airlines have stuck with the ban on metal knives. Some now have reverted to metal. Would I be wrong in thinking that nearly all of the airlines that provide metal knives are ‘Middle Eastern’ (Emirates, Qatar etc.)? Any ideas why?

  5. E.M.Smith says:

    @Sandy:

The miniature serrated dinner knife is not a very effective weapon. Yeah, you can make it work, but bare hands work better. Perhaps they have realized this… I find the plastic knives make accidental skin cuts more easily (often from molding “flash” on the edge).

One can only hope sanity slowly returns.

As it stands now, between expense, hassle, limits of baggage (size and contents), being functionally strip searched and the added few hours on the trip, I no longer fly anywhere closer than 2000 miles and prefer to drive even coast to coast.

I would fly a great deal more were the experience more like that of the 70s.

    Oh Well.

  6. Larry Ledwick says:

Coverage of the Santa Clarita shooting has completely dropped off of twitter.

Events go counter to the narrative the Left wants so it is getting suppressed.

Shooter just turned 16 the other day (making it illegal for him to even possess a gun.)
He used a .45 pistol not the much villified black rifle.
Looks like a teen age domestic dispute issue (spurrned boyfriend thing)
Early reports said the shooter was asian (country of origin not specified)

So under age, illegal to possess, wrong firearm type and wrong race.
Officials are looking at social media with rumors there had been prior threats (ie should have been flagged as a high risk individual some time ago)

The bots on twitter have gone silent on it.
That typically means the “Memo” has gone out.

  7. E.M.Smith says:

Interesting how visible the lines of control are, be they physical or group think.

  8. YMMV says:

Of course, for facts about news items, you have to go abroad…
    https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-california-shooting/on-16th-birthday-california-student-opens-fire-at-his-high-school-killing-two-idUKKBN1XO2F0

If real life high schools are anything like those in the movies, I would suggest banning high schools.

Reasonably good coverage here just what they know and not a lot of ranting.

@YMMV – yep! Whenever the news is counter to the pushed narrative, the only place to get the real story id the foreign press. It makes me feel like this is the old USSR and we have a dozen brands of Pravda here in the US.

  11. Serioso says:

Did you have a reason for leaving out deaths from handguns? Just curious!

  12. Steven Fraser says:

Ey brouthtFlying cutlery… 10 days after 9/11, I went throught DFW security on my way to England. They did not like my nail clippers! Since it was dinner time, I stopped in a very popular restaurant inside security, and ordered a dinner of Steak and Broccoli. A few minutes before the dinner arrived, they brought me my tableware, and with the other items was…wait for it.. a 6″ serrated steak knife.

  13. E.M.Smith says:

    @Serioso:

Quote from above in the article:

Easy: because gun bans and strict gun control don’t really prevent gun violence. Take, for example, Illinois and California. In 2013, there were 5,782 murders by handgun in the U.S. According to FBI data

So no, I had no reason to leave them out and did not. However, since it is Military Style Semi-Autos that are the subject of almost all the stupid legislation, they were the main focus in an article about stupid gun legislation.

  14. Larry Ledwick says:

A study conducted by the U.S. Secret Service’s National Threat Assessment Center of 41 separate school attacks released on Thursday found a common pattern among the killers; they were bullied, got in trouble at school, and were never reported to authorities, no matter how bothered others might have been by their behavior.

“These are not sudden, impulsive acts where a student suddenly gets disgruntled,” Lina Alathari, the center’s head, said in an Associated Press interview. “The majority of these incidents are preventable.”

The report covers 41 school attacks from 2008 through 2017 at K-12 schools. They were chosen if the attacker was a current or recent former student within the past year who used a weapon to injure or kill at least one person at the school while targeting others.

The weapons used were mostly guns, but knives were used, as well. One attacker used a World War II-era bayonet. Most of the weapons came from the attackers’ homes, the investigators reported.

Information now coming out in a bit more detail.
Shooter was half Japanese (explains assertion he was “Asian”)
Father was alcoholic per some source and had been charged with domestic violence.
Mother had sued father for custody of the boy shortly before the fathers death.
Father was an active hunter so had guns in the house.
Father had died recently (died in December 2017 from a heart attack)
It is believed the boy had been the one who found his fathers body after he died.

  16. John Robertson says:

The “Assault Weapon” meme has peaked,I now ask anyone who discusses “Assault weapon bans” with me”Where might I buy one?”
Cause I have looked in all my gun retailers and searched the net, nowhere can I find a weapon as described by the media and Banners of guns.
Where might I buy this wonder weapon?
For apparently it needs no human finger on the trigger.
    It is self loading.
    Self directing.
They are never clear on how it transports from place to place.
With otherworldly powers even, depending on the idiot talking.

Cause no one I have enquired of can tell me where I might buy one.
As I point out, such a tool would be a glorious boon on a cold damp fall morning, I could linger in bed and send forth my minion,”Shoot me a moose.”
And then after a lazy breakfast and coffee, I could wander out and reap the benefits of such wonder technology…
Now I own some centrefire semiauto rifles, mine are so lazy.
They will not do any of those things the “Media Assault Rifle” will do.
They just collect dust and oblige me to clean them periodicly and provide them with secure storage.

The Assault weapon as described by the media party(Yes includes the Uni-Party), would also be such a benefit to the military.
Imagine the life of a trooper if the weapon had all the abilities that our progressive comrades assign it.

  17. jim2 says:

Apparently a good number of mass shooters are incels. From the article:

ON MAY 23, 2014, 22-year-old Elliot Rodger went on a killing spree in Isla Vista, California, murdering six people and injuring 14 others. Rodger described his rampage as vengeance against attractive women for denying him sex and affection. Previous mass shooters—from Marc Lépine in Montreal in 1989 to Pittsburgh’s George Sodini in 2009—had expressed similar sentiments. Just last fall, Chris Harper-Mercer, the 26-year-old who killed nine people at Umpqua Community College in Oregon, was posting online about being “involuntarily” celibate.

What set Rodger apart from other “virgin killers” (as headlines have dubbed them) was that he left an extensive digital footprint in an Internet world dedicated to men complaining about their solo state. He’d even argued for a revolution of male incels: “If we can’t solve our problems, we must DESTROY our problems. One day incels will realize their true strength and numbers, and will overthrow this oppressive feminist system. Start envisioning a world where WOMEN FEAR YOU.”
