Tips & Notices July 2020

About “Tips”:

While I’m mostly interested in things having to do with:

Computer stuff, especially small single board computers
Making money, usually via trading
Weather and climate (“Global Warming” & “Climate Change”)
Quakes, Volcanoes, and other Earth Sciences
Current economic and political events
(often as those last three have impact on money and climate things…)
And just about any ‘way cool’ interesting science or technology
Oh, and lately, cars &
numerical computing / graphing with languages like Python & Julia ;-)

If something else is interesting to you, put a “tip” here as you like.

If there is a current Hot Topic for active discussion, try one of the Weekly Occasional Open Discussion pages here:

https://chiefio.wordpress.com/category/w-o-o-d/

You can also look at the list of “Categories” on the right hand side and get an idea of any other broad area of interest.

This ought not to be seen as a “limit” on what is “interesting”, more as a “focus list” with other things that are interesting being fair game as well.

The History:

Note that “pages” are the things reached from links on the top bar just under the pretty picture. “Postings” are reached from the listing along the right side of any given article (posting).

Since WordPress has decided that comments on Pages, like the Old Tips Pages, won’t show up in recent comments, it kind of breaks the value of it for me. In response, I shifted from a set of “pages” to a set of “postings”. As any given Tips Posting gets full, I’ll add a new one.

I have kept the same general format, with the T page (top bar) still pointing to both the archive of Tips Pages as well as the series of new Postings via a link to the TIPS category.

This is the next posting from prior Tips postings. Same idea, just a new set of space to put pointers to things of interest. The most immediately preceding Tips posting is:
https://chiefio.wordpress.com/2019/11/08/tips-notices-november-2019/
.

The generic “T” parent page remains up top, where older copies of the various “Tips” pages can be found archived. The Tips category (see list at right) marks Tips postings for easy location.

I’m seeing Amazon with $99 “Stick PCs” loaded with Windows 10.
I have an old Windows laptop doing duty as a server to a few USB devices. It’d be nice to pull the full-use device away from that duty and let a stick take over. Atom Z8350 processor.

Paranoia strikes deep… Is there much risk these are like the Smart TV scam where a cheap(er) device is sold on the strength of it Trojan Horsing away user data? Any gossip to that effect out there?

I think the issue is that the CPU is 64 bit but may only run some things 32 bit with limited driver and software available these days. Looks like software fighting from limited hardware support is what you have as a negative. IF you can show it does what you want before you buy, fine.

    Instruction set architecture
    32-bit and 64-bit hardware support
All Atom processors implement the x86 (IA-32) instruction set; however, support for the AMD 64 instruction set was not added until the desktop Diamondville and desktop and mobile Pineview cores. The Atom N2xx and Z5xx series Atom models cannot run x86-64 code. The Centerton server processors will support the Intel 64 instruction set.

    Intel 64 software support
Intel states the Atom supports 64-bit operation only “with a processor, chipset, BIOS” that all support Intel 64. Those Atom systems not supporting all of these cannot enable Intel 64. As a result, the ability of an Atom-based system to run 64-bit versions of operating systems such as Ubuntu or Debian GNU/Linux may vary from one motherboard to another.
Online retailer mini-itx.com has tested Atom-based motherboards made by Intel and Jetway, and while they were able to install 64-bit versions of Linux on Intel-branded motherboards with D2700 (Cedarview; supports maximum of 4 GB memory DDR3-800/1066]) processors, Intel 64 support was not enabled on a Jetway-branded motherboard with a D2550 (Cedarview) processor.

Even among Atom-based systems which have Intel 64 enabled, not all are able to run 64-bit versions of Microsoft Windows. For those Pineview processors which support 64-bit operation, Intel Download Center currently provides 64-bit Windows 7 and Windows Vista drivers for Intel GMA 3150 graphics, found in Pineview processors. However, no 64-bit Windows drivers are available for Intel Atom Cedarview processors, released Q3 2011. However, Intel’s Bay Trail-M processors, built on the Silvermont microarchitecture and released in the second half of 2013, regain 64-bit support, although driver support for Linux and Windows 7 is limited at launch.

The lack of 64-bit Windows support for Cedarview processors appears to be due to a driver issue. A member of the Intel Enthusiast Team has stated in a series of posts on enthusiast site Tom’s Hardware that while the Atom D2700 (Cedarview) was designed with Intel 64 support, due to a “limitation of the board” Intel had pulled their previously-available 64-bit drivers for Windows 7 and would not provide any further 64-bit support. Some system manufacturers have similarly stated that their motherboards with Atom Cedarview processors lack 64-bit support due to a “lack of Intel® 64-bit VGA driver support”. Because all Cedarview processors use the same Intel GMA 3600 or 3650 graphics as the D2700, this indicates that Atom Cedarview systems will remain unable to run 64-bit versions of Windows, even those which have Intel 64 enabled and are able to run 64-bit versions of Linux.

Running headless you don’t need a graphics driver, I think, but I’ve not run Windows headless much (more on kvm switch shared head…)

    Prrsonally I’d use a Raspberry Pi for $35 for a file server….

Oh, per trojans and data loss: you get all the security of standard Windows with the Atom, enhanced by low vendor interest and limited sotware attention.

Saudi is definitely Native Title Land

    How come Aboriginals are Special?

Jewish people in Saudi (including Mecca and Medina):

    Indigenous
Probably there for 50,000+ years, longer than Aboriginals
    Connection to land
    Invaded by others
